Completed Projects - Report/Proceedings Available
- “Potential for Growth of Gas as Clean Energy Source in APEC Developing Economies”
This project in conjunction with an APEC Natural Gas Utilization Workshop” held on 27-29 August 2007 in Guangzhou, China, focused on the institutional, technology, and financing issues related to accelerating natural gas development in the region.
- Workshop on LNG Public Education (EWG06-2006T)
This event “Increasing LNG trade in the APEC Region: Information Exchange on LNG Public Education Campaigns” was held in Guangzhou, China, 5-7 November 2007, together with a site visit to the Dapeng LNG facility.
- How Can Environmental Regulations Promote Clean Coal Technology Adoption in APEC Developing Economies? (EWG 05/2006)
This assessment recommended a mix of the possible regulatory options - emissions trading, technology standards, and thermal efficiency targets - as well as early introduction of more stringent environmental regulations. It concluded that since the cost of new CCTs would normally be prohibitive for developing economies, significant funding from international organizations would likely be needed.
- EGCFE Clean Fossil Energy Technical and Policy Seminar: “Harmonious and Sustainable Coal Power Generation.”
This seminar was held in Xi’an, PRC, during October 15-18, 2007, hosted by the Xi’an Thermal Power Research Institute Co. Ltd., and organized jointly by the EGCFE and the Thermal Power Chapter of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering (TPC/CSEE).
New Projects Underway:
- Lessons Learned in Upgrading and Refurbishing Older Coal-Fired Power Plants - A Best Practice Guide for Developing APEC Economies (EWG 05/2007)
This project, being carried out by WorleyParsons of the United States, will draw lessons from case studies of plant upgrading project experience that serve to improve the prioritization and economic assessment methods used in plant refurbishment decision-making, and will incorporate these in best practice guidelines for developing APEC economies.
- Technology Status and Project Development Risks of Advanced Coal Power Generation Technologies in APEC Developing Economies (EWG 06/2007A)
This project, being carried out by WorleyParsons of the United States, is assessing the status, performance, relative costs, and project development/financing risks for coal-based IGCC generating plants versus supercritical and ultra supercritical pulverized-coal plants operating in different economies. It will make recommendations on policy measures and financial incentives needed to favor projects using CCTs in APEC economies where energy needs are expanding rapidly and coal is the fuel of choice.
- Environmental Monitoring for Coal-Fired Power Plants in Developing Asian APEC Economies (EWG 06/2007)
This project, being carried out by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) of the United States, is assessing experience in developing Asian APEC economies in environmental monitoring and reporting by individual power plants, and will make recommendations regarding monitoring and how it should interact with regulations to promote adoption of clean coal technologies.
Recently Approved Project (More info soon):
- Reducing Trade, Regulatory, and Financing Barriers to Accelerate the Uptake of Clean Coal Technologies by Developing Economies in the Asia Pacific Region
This is a joint project with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which has a similar program in the Asia Pacific region focusing on six economies - China, Indonesia, India, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The first joint activity will be a regional workshop on harmonizing emissions regulations as a driver for the uptake of clean coal technologies.
- Increasing the Knowledge and Awareness of Carbon Capture and Storage: Capacity Building in the APEC Region (Phase IV)
The project builds on three previously funded APEC projects in this area, including an assessment of the geological storage potential of CO2 in APEC economies; development of training materials to promote and transfer carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies; and capacity-building training workshops in China and Mexico. It will organize two additional capacity-building workshops, in collaboration with the Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
- Assessment of the Capture and Storage Potential of CO2 Co-Produced with Natural Gas in South-East Asia
The objective of this project is to assess the techno-economic feasibility of reducing carbon dioxide CO2 emissions resulting from natural gas production in South-East Asia through CCS technologies, specifically by re-injecting the gas into subsurface geological formations.
DECEMBER 2006
